If you were really great and powerful, you’d keep your promises!” ~ Dorothy speaking before the throne of Oz… He is, Dorothy. He is. And He does. God became a man. But instead of hiding behind the curtain He tore it from top to bottom, allowing us entrance so that we would all know that He is indeed GREAT and POWERFUL and One who does KEEP HIS PROMISES!

Follow the yellow brick road.” ~ the Munchkins giving Dorothy directions to the Emerald City… My son’s response? “Not the red.” Sometimes life is as simple as listening to the right voice and making the right choice. His Word. His path.

I’m not afraid of her! I’ll see you get safely to the Wizard now, whether I get a brain or not.” ~ Scarecrow reassuring Dorothy after their encounter with the Wicked Witch… Selfless and sacrificial. Loving and loyal. There are few blessings in life greater than faithful friends. God, grant me the heart of Scarecrow. May I be that friend who is found faithful no matter the circumstance, adversity or personal cost.

Dorothy: “How can you talk if you haven’t got a brain?” Scarecrow: “I don’t know… But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking… don’t they?” Dorothy: “Yes, I guess you’re right.” … Be quick to hear. Slow to speak. Think about the possible impact. Think about the potential consequences. There is life and death in the tongue. Choose and use your words wisely.

Wizard of Oz: “As for you, my galvanized friend, you want a heart. You don’t know how lucky you are not to have one. Hearts will never be practical until they can be made unbreakable.” Tin Woodsman: “But I still want one.” … Life can hurt. Life can be hard. Life can leave us wounded. Jaded. Resentful. Bitter. The tempation is to build walls. Build them strong. Build them high. Keep others out in the hopes of keeping the hurt out. But that’s no way to live. There are no guarantees when you love…but love anyway. Love is risky. But love has great reward.

Yes – let the joyous news be spread! The Wicked Old Witch at last is dead!” ~ mayor of Munchkin City… Singing. Dancing. Shouting. Gift giving. What a CELEBRATION!!! Terror, tyranny and the threat of death had been vanquished from their lives. Has not our Jesus done even more on our behalf? He has defeated sin, death, and hell! God’s love is meant to be celebrated! Such joyous news is meant to be shared!

Dorothy: “…it’s that if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard because, if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with. Is that right?” … I find myself struggling with value asignments. I tend to give my time, efforts, and energy to things that are temporary at best. Too often I desire and seek the wrong things. Family, friends, and and fellowship with the living God. These are the things that really count.

Dorothy: “Goodbye, Lion. I know it isn’t right, but I’m going to miss the way you used to hollar for help before you found your courage.” Cowardly Lion: “I never would’ve found it if it hadn’t been for you…” … True friends are the ones who help us move from “who we are” to “who we can be.” Anyone can find fault. Words of criticism and discouragement are easy. But rare is the friend who is able to give us hope…hope that we are not bound by our past or destined to forever live in the shadows of our own frailties. Dorothy took the Lion to someone who could bring change. Those of us who know Jesus should be doing the same.
